Ozempic (Prescribed Medication) Should Only Be Used by Diabetics
Diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate in the United States. According to the CDC’s
(Centers for Disease Control) National Diabetes Statistics Report for 2022, cases of diabetes
have risen to an estimated 37.3 million (2023, March 31). Today more Americans are suffering
from type one or type two diabetes. While there is a whole gauntlet of different medications
people with diabetes can take, the most effective medication on the market is Ozempic. Living in
such a vain world, people now use this medication as a weight loss method, and America has a
dilemma. Because so many people use this medication for weight loss, people with diabetes have
to go without it, skip doses to make their medication last longer or go without, which could be
deadly. Therefore, Ozempic should only be used by people with diabetes.
What is Diabetes
When the pancreas stops making insulin or the body can’t use the insulin it does make
well, diabetes becomes a chronic condition. The pancreas produces the hormone insulin, which
functions as a key to allow glucose from food to enter cells in the body to be used for energy. In
the blood, all carbohydrates are broken down into glucose. Insulin facilitates glucose entry into
cells. The condition known as hyperglycemia is characterized by elevated blood glucose levels
caused by the body’s inability to produce or effectively use insulin. Long-term damage to the
body and the failure of various organs and tissues are linked to high glucose levels. Diabetes type
1 can occur at any age, but children and adolescents are more likely to develop it. Because your
body produces very little or no insulin when you have type 1 diabetes, you need insulin
injections daily to control your blood glucose levels. Diabetes type 2 is more typical in grownups and represents around 90% of all diabetes cases. Your body does not use the insulin it makes
well when you have type 2 diabetes. A healthy way of life, which includes getting more exercise
and eating a healthy diet, is essential to treating type 2 diabetes. However, most people with type
2 diabetes will eventually require insulin or oral medications to control their blood glucose
People with Diabetes Using Ozempic
While so many different medications are available for people with diabetes, studies have
shown that Ozempic is one of the leading meds that help keep people’s diabetes under control.
Ozempic is an injection given weekly to adults with type 2 diabetes to lower blood sugar levels.
It is also used to lower adults with type 2 diabetes with heart disease risk of major cardiovascular
events like stroke, heart attack, or death. Ozempic works by binding to GLP-1 receptors. This
causes the pancreas to release insulin when needed, helps the liver release less sugar, and slows
food leaving your stomach. The mix of these impacts assists with bringing down I1C and glucose
levels and may likewise aid with diminishing your craving.
Weight Loss Use of Ozempic
Ozempic, a drug used to treat diabetes, keeps gaining attention as celebrities, a tech
mogul and TikTok influencers have described taking it to lose weight in short time frames. On
TikTok, the hashtag #Ozempic has been viewed over 273 million times, with people alternately
expressing shock over their supposed medication-induced weight loss and swapping stories
about side effects (Blum, 2022). Although this is a quick fix for people that want to lose weight,
it is not healthy, and people complain about the side effects of this medication. Moreover, this
medication was created to treat diabetes. In turn, they give people with diabetes the short end of
the stick. This medication is In high demand, and the stock is scarce. Using it as a first come,
first serve bias, rich people can get Ozempic easier than someone with diabetes with Medicare.
Risks of Taking Ozempic for Weight Loss
Ozempic has worked well for both people with diabetes and people seeking to lose
weight. People looking to take Ozempic for weight loss should take heed because the test for this
medication has only been used for people with diabetes. No studies or trials show how this
medicine would specifically work on weight loss patients. Before any medication is prescribed,
the FDA must thoroughly test it. People looking to lose weight fast are jeopardizing their lives
by taking Ozempic, not knowing what the long-term side effects can do to them.
Ultimately, healthcare is more important than vanity. Of course, to live a longer life,
everyone should eat healthily and exercise daily. This helps both diabetics and people that want
to lose weight. Regarding Ozempic, this medication is needed to help people with diabetes
control their A1C blood levels. This should not be used as a quick fix to lose weight fast. This is
an injustice to the people who need this medication, and it is not for vanity; it is for the diabetic’s
quality of life. They need it to survive.
